For southwest décor and lighting, use bleached rawhide which has a consistent light cream color with occasional brown, gold and rust colored highlights and a warm glow when illuminated. The light rawhide of southwestern lamp shades is a warm accompaniment to other southwest elements. If you have Indian pottery or Indian drums on the wall or other leather or raw hide near lamp shade they pick up the color tones and carry the theme throughout the room. Light rawhide lamp shades look best with light or natural colored rustic wood furniture and accessories such as kiva ladders. Our southwest rawhide shades are an excellent example of skill and lamp shade craftsmanship.
Before we go to some design principles let's talk about the 3 main types of illumination.
Lamp shades are decorative covers for lamps. They are used to diffuse and direct light coming from a lamp or light bulb. Shades can be conical, cylindrical, or take on other forms. They can fit floor, desk, or table top lamp models. Suspended lamp models are also very popular. Some lamps come with their own shades; others can be fitted with shades that can be bought at home décor stores. Shades can also be custom-tailored to fit lamps of all sizes.
First, there is Ambient light. This is the over all room light that you use to prevent you from pumping into things at night. It's a broad use light such as a overhead chandeliers or canned inset light. Most builders today will install a ceiling light in each room. With this type of lighting most of the shading consists of a glass cover over the bulb and attached plate.
A standard shade mount has a center bar across the top with a hole for the harp mount or a washer centered by three supports that attach to the top rim of the shade. Both allow the shade to be secured to the harp. Some smaller lamps and chandeliers don't use a harp but instead use a bulb clip to attach directly to the bulb. A bulb clip is simply two wire loops that are attached to the shade's center bar and grip the bulb.
