Shawna Terry Lamp Shades November 02nd, 2018 - 09:55:13
Mid-century modern, looking lamp, it's pretty cool, it's got an awesome shape to it, but it's not in the best condition I ended up buying it. For I think two dollars so hey, I'm just the hardware alone is worth that I'm going to go ahead and put a little bit darker stain on it, but the big problem with it. If you look here, there's quite a ridge on it, so I'm going to have to sand that down and fix that also on the corners there, all a little bit rough. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to hit it with a belt sander and clean it all up. I got some hammered brass spray paint, so I'm going to spray-paint the plastic and this metal piece here not the way.
You don't see the cheap plastic, hopefully, that will kind of class it up a little bit. So here we go before I could really get started. I had to break everything down so first I had to take off the foam padding on the bottom of the leg. After that was off, I went ahead and tried to take out the electrical wire here. I figured out that I wasn't going to be able to take out the wire without breaking the solder connection, so I decided to sand it down and prep it with the wire. Still attached, so I moved to the belt sander.
I took my time here and made sure I got all the edges smooth flat, excluding the one side that had the electrical wire sticking out of it. Then I got a palm sander with 60 grit and sanded. The entire thing, after I hand sanded to get into all the right places and just took down the edges a little bit. I switch to some 320 grit and scented it all again. So here I got a little bit too aggressive with the belt sander and accidentally send it through the coating on the wire. So I just got it some electrical tape and a heat gun and covered that spot up now, it's time for paint.
So I got some newspaper and blue painters tape and completely covered the body of the land. You'll want to make sure and cover the part of the plug that goes into the outlet, as well as the socket for the light bulb after I did a couple coats and let it dry, I removed the newspaper and prep the body for stain. Finally, all that I had to do left will put the hardware back where it needs to be and tighten it up, then screw on a light bulb.
