Dale Tiffany lampshade is the world's largest manufacturer of Louis Comfort, Tiffany reproductions, carrying on a tradition of both beauty and craftsmanship. Dale uses only genuine American art glass produced in a limited number of highly specialized glass factories here in the United States. True art glass is created by a special process, called the batch process which blends in swirls various colors of molten glass to create unique and individualized patterns, unlike machine made or monochrome glass.
Which has a simple color or stain added to it, art glass exhibits the same subtle shadings of color, as found in flower, leaves and petals incorporating precious metals such as gold, silver and selenium, to create very unique colors such as rose lavender powder, blue and especially the more vibrant reds greens and purples after the colors are hand blended in this batch process, the glass is rolled into sheets, preserving the subtle variations in color that will ultimately make everyday lamp, a unique work of art many times in the final process. Slight changes are made in the glass and the rolling to create a molded or stipple defect, duplicating what Elsie Tiffany did in his original glass factory.
This creative process continues at the Dale factory, where each sheet of glass is cut into a myriad of small pieces. According to a master design pattern, since glass cannot be soldered directly to glass, these pieces must be individually edged with copper, foil, an operation that is crucial to the strength and structure of the shape for authenticity. Dale uses a 3/16 inch, copper foil, identical to that used in Lewis, Tiffany's original masterworks. The prepared glass pieces are then carefully assembled over various molds or templates according to the style shade being produced.
This is a slow and intricate process requiring both patience and skill. As each piece is accurately positioned in the correct place, in order to complete the shade, each piece is soldered both inside and out then finish to a soft smoothness. As the shade is completed, a copper wire and bead of solder is added to the rim in order to give extra strength to the shade. This painstaking process is repeated. An endless variation as each design is reproduced. Careful attention to detail distinguishes each design. For instance, Dale creates a special antique finish by adding certain chemicals to the solder.
