Yoga Is So Taxing...

Did you ever wonder if your yoga class should collect and remit sales tax from you?  Well, in Washington State, the answer to this question depends on whether your yoga class is educational in nature, or a physical fitness service.  The Washington State Department of Revenue recently issued an Excise Tax Advisory on this issue:

"The purpose of this advisory is to clarify the distinction between physical fitness services, which are
retail sales subject to retailing B&O and retail sales taxes, and therapeutic activities and instructional
lessons in physical fitness, which are subject to the service and other B&O tax."

You can find the the ETA here.

The exemption was enacted by the Legislature in 2005 with a delayed effective date.  The exemption is effective through Dec. 31, 2010.  It includes the 0.3 percent motor vehicle sales tax."
